The Requirements of Motherhood are Mortifying

Childbirth

This piece would work to highlight my own fears of childbirth, and the experience itself that seems wildly discomforting and traumatic, as well as the neglect that can occur in healthcare.

The Requirements of Motherhood are Mortifying

Postpartum

The experience a woman may feel postpartum - post birth - is not always such a magical time as it is made out to be. The figure is left by herself, with this small infant causing her world to melt around her. Her posture is meant to depict defeat, paralysis, and the overall intensity of coming to grips with the responsibility this infant entails. This image is also meant to speak to postpartum depression and psychosis, which is rarely addressed in childrearing.

Fourth piece in series of five

The Requirements of Motherhood are Mortifying

Autonomy

This image is meant to be a revision of the depiction of Aphrodite, who in her original pose can be seen both covering and drawing attention to her breasts and genitalia. In this rendition, she is facing forward and looking above the viewer, holding a strong stance and focused on her own ambitions. The roses that surround her speak to the beauty and power she owns. The thorns act as protection of herself, and she wields complete control over them.
